3rd Week in the Classroom:

Materials Needed:
  • 8 1/2 x 17 in. white paper (one per student)
  • variety of colored markers

1. Creating a Story Map of the Story You're Going to Tell:
  • After assigning each student a story from their Top 3 List, ask the class to read over their newly assigned stories again before creating a story map of it.
  • Tell them to keep these things in mind while creating their own story map:
  • • Make a visual picture of your story using stick figures
    • What are the e events of the story?
    • It’s a memory activity, not art
    • It’s quick, shouldn’t take long to complete
    • Take a bunch of different colors and think/ask “What color is that character?”
    • It’s another way of thinking without using words
    • This activity has NO words and it should only take about 60 seconds (Folks actually finished up between 5-7 minutes)

    Reflection on Activity:
    • Helped identify parts unfamiliar
    • Helped see echoes or patterns (recurring)
    • If you can’t visualize it (picture it) you can’t tell it
    • Helps you see what connections you are making or how you resonate with the piece.

3rd Week in the Library:

Materials Needed:
  • Display many folk tales from the 398.2 section of the library

1. Walking as Your Character:
  • Sitting on the rug in a circle, ask the students to think about their main character of the story they are going to tell– where he is how he feels, then stand up in the posture of your character (Everyone does)
  • Now walking in a circle counter-clockwise walk as your character, if walking/moving faster than others make a smaller circle inside. If you’re an animal and walk on two feet, but in the gesture of character of that animal.
  • Now add a gesture while moving on count of 3 …1,2,3 – Gesture (folks stopped to gesture) Then back to walking in character.
  • Now add voice if necessary to gesture. Everyone on count of 3 …1,2,3,
  • Repeat several times.
  • Now go back and go through the whole process with the 2nd major character.
  • Then walk in 1st, 2nd or yourself as teacher calls it out. Move between the three often without much interruption.

2. Characters Meet:
  • Half the group lines up on 1 side of the room, the other half are opposite side.
  • Walking in character, silently meet up with the person across from you who is in character.
  • Characters meet in the middle and exchange places on either side.
  • Now, have one side mix-up the order in line so meeting up with different person.
  • This time, improvise an exchange staying in character but this time speaking.

3. Check Out Books from the 398.2 Section of the Library:
  • Explain that all of the tales the students are working on for the Storytelling Festival are folktales. If you enjoyed reading and listening to these stories, then the 398.2 section of the library is for you. Highlight some folktales from this section that you might think appeal to this class.
